Corrine de Mestre - Specialty Skills - Project Management, Fauna Identification, Habitat Assessment, Threatened Species Conservation and Management.

In 1999 Corrine de Mestre graduated from James Cook University, Cairns completing a Bachelor of Science with majors in Tropical Zoology and Geography. As part of the course she completed several field projects including flora surveys of tropical savannas and wet tropics rainforest, intertidal zones and mangroves in addition to assisting with a bandicoot research program.

Corrine completed an Honours thesis in 2002 investigating the effects of season, reproductive status, and captivity on the adrenal activity in the Southern Snow Skink (Niveoscincus microleptidotus). Throughout this course she gained skills in managing a scientific research project, data collection and collation, immunology, blood extraction, radio-immunoassaying, and report writing.

Corrine is also currently completing her Masters in Wildlife (Habitat) Management at Macquarie University. This degree is closely aligned to the ecological studies conducted with Lesryk.

A host of volunteer work and a variety of past roles has also developed Corrine’s knowledge in a broad range of areas including marine science, captive husbandry, bush regeneration, community consultation, herpetology, and wildlife education.

Corrine is currently working as an ecologist for LesryK Environmental Consultants. Her main duties in this role are the undertaking of ecological field surveys, the research for and preparation of reports, environmental management and conducting environmental assessments, habitat identification and the assessment of the habitat value of areas to species of conservation significance. This position has provided Corrine with a working knowledge of:

  • Those techniques required to identify a diverse range of native fauna; and
  • The relevant State and Commonwealth legislation that pertain to the assessment of developments and their potential to adversely affect threatened species.

Liaison and negotiation with government departments, local councils and other land holders on contracts and continuing work is also a component of Corrine’s work.

Fauna identification techniques implemented by Corrine are standard survey techniques and include the use of up to date technology. Some of these techniques are habitat assessment, direct observation, spotlighting, use of ultrasonic bat detectors, live and hair tube trapping, and call playbacks for threatened owl and frog species.

Corrine’s recent work has included projects within Sydney (eg. Campbelltown, Penrith, Baulkham Hills Shire, and Manly local government areas), Western NSW (Wagga Wagga and Gwydir local government areas), the Shoalhaven/Illawarra, and Lake Macquarie local government area. This work has been completed on behalf of the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority, Sydney Water, and various other consultants.
