Stephen is currently working as an ecologist for LesryK Environmental Consultants. His main duties in this role are the undertaking of field surveys, the preparation of reports, environmental management, the conducting of environmental assessments, habitat identification and the assessment of the habitat value of areas to species of conservation significance. This position has provided Stephen with a working knowledge of:
• Those techniques required to identify a diverse range of native fauna; and
• The relevant State and Commonwealth legislation that pertain to the assessment of developments and their potential to adversely affect threatened species.
Liaison and negotiation with government departments, local councils and other land holders on contracts and continuing work is also a component of Stephen’s work.
Fauna identification techniques implemented by Stephen are standard survey techniques and include the use of up to date technology. Some of these techniques are habitat assessment, direct observation, spotlighting, use of ultrasonic bat detectors, live and hair tube trapping, and call playbacks for threatened owl and frog species. Stephen’s recent work has included projects within Sydney (eg. Bankstown, Campbelltown, Fairfield, Baulkham Hills Shire, Penrith and Ku-ring-gai local government areas), Shellharbour and a project extending from Tamworth to Tenterfield. This work has been completed on behalf of the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority and various other consultants.
